Viral marketing is honestly a genius strategy. Most of the time today’s internet users have ad blockers installed to avoid annoying pop ups and such, so making an ad viral is a great way to actually make sure it reaches an audience, especially if its not obtrusively obvious that its an ad. Also, trends come and go very quickly, so to keep up with whats big at the moment, its important to be able to get your message out quickly and make sure its wide spread, which viral marketing does. Viral marketing is smart in making use of people with a large social media presence and making the ad unavoidable, as thats often the only way to get an ad across anymore. With everything being “viral” nowadays its no surprise that marketing agencies would figure out a way to take this to their advantage and employ the strategy. It’s sort of really funny to think of these ads as a virus targeting “susceptible hosts” because lets be real, we do become “infected” with certain ideas, and we as a species love to communicate so of course we’d pass along the message. These viral messages sort of become like the popular myths that are passed along, such as we only use 10% of our brain, etc., and its easy to assume that the message will be spread effectively. Ive definitely done this myself. Anyways, its a cool strategy and definitely one that has proven to work.
